Rare Antique Elkington Demitasse & Liqueur Six Person Service – 1920

1900 - 1920
Description

This stylish and unusual Six Person Elkington silver-plated service is a superb example of early-20th-century British design. Complete with a purpose-made silver-plated stand, it includes six fine porcelain demitasse cups with gilt handles and six clear glass liqueur or shot glasses, all neatly arranged in a two-tiered format.

The elegant tiered stand is formed from a silver-plated wire frame with sculptural loops that securely cradle the cups and glasses. It features a central handle for easy carrying and serving. Each saucer is removable and supports either a porcelain coffee cup or glass shot glass, allowing the set to function beautifully for either after-dinner espresso service or liqueur presentation.

This set bears the stamp of Elkington & Co, one of Britain’s most respected silver plate manufacturers, and is marked with the date letter ‘I’ for the year 1920.

Measurements:

Height: 8 1/4" (approx. 21cm)

Diameter: 11 1/2" (approx. 29cm)

Total weight: 1362g

In good condition – The silver plating remains bright with only minimal signs of wear consistent with age. No chips or cracks to the porcelain or glass cups. The stand is stable and solid, and all holders fit perfectly.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. FAQs

A demitasse and liqueur service is a specialised tableware set designed for serving strong espresso coffee alongside digestif spirits following a formal meal.

Early 20th-century services typically feature silver-plated or sterling silver frames paired with porcelain or bone china cups and clear glass liqueur vessels.

Authentic Elkington pieces feature distinct makers marks, including the initials E&Co inside a shield or rectangle, alongside date letters and quality hallmarks stamped into the metal.

Position the assembled stand on a dining room sideboard or home bar cart to serve as a functional accent piece during dinner parties.

Clean silver-plated components with a soft cloth and specialised silver polish, while hand-washing glass and ceramic inserts separately in warm soapy water.
