Early 18th Century Solid Walnut English Bureau Bookcase

18th century
Description

A delightful early 18th century solid walnut bureau bookcase having attractive

double domed top with replacement mirror plates to panelled doors

enclosing well fitted interior above well figured fall, two short and two long

drawers with replacement brass plate handles raised on original

shaped bracket feet.

(This wonderfully attractive bureau bookcase is of typical early 18th century

design and constructed from beautiful solid walnut which retains a rich, warm

colour. The double domed design of the top adds really elegance and although

the handles are replacements they are of the design that would originally have

been in place. Also the mirror plates in the doors are relatively new replacements

meaning there is no foxing, or silvering of any kind to worry about and the piece

will look just as at home in a modern design interior as a traditional one. It is rare

to find one of these in solid walnut, rather than burr veneers and in our opinion this

adds a significant amount of charm to the piece).

Circa 1720

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau bookcase is a two-part furniture design featuring a slant-front writing desk at the base and a tall cabinet section above, historically used to store manuscripts, books, and writing supplies.

Pieces from the early 18th century were predominantly crafted using walnut, figure-matched veneers, and oak drawer linings, decorated with brass drop handles and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, original oak secondary timber, period-correct brass hardware fittings, and natural wood oxidisation inside drawer interiors.

Position the piece as a focal point in a formal sitting room, home library, or hallway, pairing its dark timber tones with neutral wall palettes and structured lighting.

Maintain walnut surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, keeping the item away from direct heat sources or intense sunlight.
