Art Nouveau emerged in the late 19th century, rejecting historic revival styles in favour of flowing, organic lines inspired by natural forms, which heavily influenced desk items such as letter racks and inkwells.

Such pieces typically combined solid sterling silver frameworks with wooden backing supports, such as oak or mahogany, often featuring green baize or velvet bases to protect furniture surfaces.

Authentic items bear clear hallmarks, including a makers mark, a lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark indicating the assay office, and a date letter corresponding to the year of testing.

Placed on a modern writing desk or a console table, it introduces historic metallic texture and functional elegance while contrasting against minimalist architecture.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a non-abrasive silver cloth and specialised polish to maintain the patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip the aged character.
