FAQs

Wine coasters emerged in the mid-18th century during the reign of George III, designed to protect polished dining tables from moisture and scratches when passing wine bottles around the table.

These items typically feature a heavy gauge sterling silver rim, often decorated with pierced work, fluting, or gadrooning, set upon a turned wooden base usually crafted from mahogany or oak.

Authenticity is verified by checking for British hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver, including the makers mark, standard mark for sterling silver, and a date letter corresponding to the regnal period.

An antique silver wine coaster can be repurposed on a sideboard or coffee table to hold small decorative items, pillar candles, or as a refined catch-all tray.

Preserve the metal by cleaning it occasionally with a non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals, and keeping the wooden base dry to prevent warping.
