Georgian sugar tongs reflect the rising popularity of tea and coffee drinking during the 18th and early 19th centuries, when sugar was an expensive commodity requiring specialised serving utensils.

These items were typically handcrafted from sterling silver using techniques such as hammer-raising, piercing, and hand-engraving, often featuring spring-action bows.

Authenticity is determined by examining struck hallmarks, which include the makers mark, town mark (such as Newcastle three castles), and standard marks indicating sterling fineness.

Antique silver pieces add a layer of historical contrast when displayed in modern settings, such as resting inside a glass cabinet or used functionally on a bar cart.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a soft cloth and a specialised non-abrasive polish to protect the patina, and stored in a tarnish-resistant environment.
