Victorian lighting features a combination of ornate metalwork, such as cast brass or bronze, paired with decorative coloured glass reservoirs, reflecting the industrial manufacturing capabilities and aesthetic tastes of the late nineteenth century.

These lamps typically combine a heavy metal base and burner mechanism made of brass, copper, or spelter with a blown or moulded glass fuel font, occasionally featuring brass collars and ceramic components.

Authenticity is often verified by makers marks stamped on the brass thumb-turns of the burner mechanism (such as Duplex or Hinks), the weight and construction of the cast metal base, and the hand-finished characteristics of the glass font.

An antique oil lamp works well as a sculptural accent on a side table, mantelpiece, or sideboard, adding historical contrast and texture to a modern room scheme.

Brass components should be dusted gently with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina, while glass fonts can be cleaned carefully with mild soapy water and dried thoroughly.
