Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Japanese blue and white Imari porcelain, often termed sometsuke, refers to high-fired ceramic wares decorated with underglaze cobalt blue paint prior to clear glaze application and firing. Originating in the Arita region during the seventeenth century, these wares frequently feature naturalistic flora, fauna, and geometric border patterning.

Traditional pieces were crafted from kaolin-rich clay, turned on a potters wheel or press-moulded, and painted by hand using cobalt oxide pigment on unglazed porcelain bisque. A clear glaze was applied over the painted surface before subjecting the piece to a single high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic historical pieces generally display subtle manual variations in brushwork, firing imperfections such as small spur marks or kiln grit on the base, and a smooth wear pattern along the foot rim. Additionally, the cobalt blue tone often exhibits depth and texture rather than uniform modern printed precision.

Decorative porcelain plates can be displayed on plate stands atop sideboards, arranged inside glazed cabinet shelving, or mounted in structured wall groupings to introduce colour and pattern. Pairing underglaze blue ceramics with natural timber surfaces or minimal contemporary backdrops creates visual contrast.

Preservation requires gentle hand washing using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or automated dishwashers. Displaying pieces away from high-traffic edges or using padded display stands prevents accidental chips and structural stress.
