The Imari design originated in Japan and is defined by a distinct palette of cobalt blue, iron red, and gilding. During the 19th century, British ironstone manufacturers adapted this style to meet high demand for durable oriental-inspired tableware.

Ironstone is a dense, vitreous earthenware formulation containing petuntse and clay. The blue element was applied as an underglaze decoration, while red and polychrome enamel detailing was painted over the glaze before a final firing.

Authentic period pieces exhibit substantial weight, slightly uneven hand-painted brushwork, subtle glaze wear, and maker stamps or painted pattern numbers on the underside.
