This Victorian solid silver basket dates from the 19th century and carries full hallmarks for James Deakin & Sons of Sheffield, dated 1897. The piece is formed of sterling silver with a reflective metallic silver finish and weighs 365 grams. The oval vessel stands on an oval pedestal foot decorated with a pierced patterned border. A tall overhead swing handle attaches to the sides with small circular pivot mounts and terminates in a tiny spherical finial at the apex. The wide rim features a crimped edge and a broad border filled with embossed floral scrolls and foliage. Inside the bowl, a circular medallion of pierced scrollwork adorns the central base, surrounded by smooth reflective surfaces showing light age-related wear. Measuring approximately 28 cm in length, 21 cm in width, and 9 cm in height, the basket makes a functional accessory in a home setting today. It sits well on a dining table sideboard top, a living room console, or a mantelpiece, serving as a display container for small items or decorative objects within an English Country House interior.

Victorian silver cake baskets were decorative tableware items introduced in the eighteenth century and widely produced during the nineteenth century to serve baked goods, fruits, or confectionery at formal tea and dinner gatherings.

These baskets were primarily crafted from solid sterling silver or silver plate, using metalworking techniques such as embossing, chasing, repousse, and fluting, often finished with a hinged swing handle and a raised pedestal foot.

Authentic British pieces feature official hallmark stamps indicating the silver purity mark, city assay mark, date letter, and makers mark stamped into the metal surface, alongside characteristic Victorian decorative motifs.

An antique silver basket functions as a refined centrepiece on a dining table, sideboard, or coffee table, serving either as a standalone statement piece or as a decorative holder for dry ornaments.

Sterling silver should be polished periodically with a gentle silver cream or soft microfibre cloth, washed gently in warm soapy water without abrasive chemicals, and stored away from excess humidity to prevent tarnish and oxidisation.
