Early 16th Century Carved Walnut Coffer Of Small Proportions

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: School House Antiques

An early 16th-century Flemish walnut coffer from the Renaissance period showcases a rich color and a well-preserved, original, untouched patina. The exterior is reinforced with its original decorative iron strapwork, secured with handmade nails. The front is hand-carved, depicting two mythical beasts facing each other with ropes in their mouths, holding the top down, which adds a unique aesthetic appeal. The lid, attached with original iron pin hinges on each side, lifts to reveal the untouched interior. The coffer is raised on its shaped base. It features an iron lock plate with a hasp. This rare item, having survived five centuries with minimal repairs, retains its original patina and character.
