Westphalian coffers originate from North-West Germany, where sturdy oak timber was used to craft utilitarian storage trunks. During the 17th and 18th centuries, these chests were often reinforced with heavy wrought iron fittings to secure household valuables, linens, and dowries.

Traditional coffers were constructed primarily from solid native oak boards, joined with wooden dowels or hand-cut joinery. Wrought iron bands, hinges, and lock plates were hand-forged by blacksmiths and fixed with iron studs or rosehead nails.
