This Italian Venetian chandelier from 1930 takes the form of a sailing ship, fashioned from clear glass, crystal and metal wirework. It has three candle sockets mounted within glass drip pans, suspended glass prisms along the hull, beaded wirework rigging, and hanging crystal pendants at the bow and stern. The piece measures 56 cm high, 50 cm wide and 36 cm deep, with the height excluding the chain and ceiling rose. The maximalist design creates a striking statement piece suited to an entryway, dining room or living space. It is fully restored and rewired with standard fittings, ready for suspension from a suitable ceiling point in a modern home.

Galleon chandeliers were first crafted in Italy and France, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries, as novelty statement lighting. Shaped like historic sailing vessels, these fixtures were designed to showcase elaborate glass beads and wirework techniques.

These light fixtures are constructed using a metal wire frame or armature, which is hand-strung with small glass or crystal beads. Additional elements often include blown glass bobeches, metal candle sleeves, and hanging crystal prisms or droplets.

Authentic period examples feature hand-twisted metal frames, natural patination on the metal wirework, and minor irregularities in the hand-cut or hand-blown glass components. Modern reproductions tend to use uniform machine-cut beads and lightweight modern wiring.

A galleon chandelier serves as a focal piece when suspended above a dining table, within a high-ceiling hallway, or in a central entryway. Pairing ornate lighting with clean-lined modern furniture highlights the architectural silhouette of the fixture.

Dust the fixture regularly using a soft feather duster or gentle microfiber cloth. For deeper cleaning, apply a specialized crystal cleaning solution or dilute mild soap on a damp cloth, taking care not to pull on the delicate bead wirework or allow moisture onto electrical connections.
