Victorian dessert sets gained immense popularity during the 19th century as formal dining rituals expanded to include dedicated courses for fruit and sweets, often presented in fitted wooden boxes.

These sets typically feature sterling silver or silver-plated blades and tines paired with handles carved from natural mother-of-pearl, housed in velvet-lined wooden cases.

Authenticity is determined by checking for official silver hallmarks stamped on the metal components, evaluating the natural iridescent grain of the mother-of-pearl handles, and examining the craftsmanship of the fitted case.

An antique cased set can be displayed closed on a sideboard or opened inside a glass-fronted cabinet to introduce texture, heritage, and metallic accents to a dining room.

Silver requires periodic gentle polishing with a non-abrasive cloth, while mother-of-pearl should be kept away from harsh chemicals and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent cracking.
