Victorian furniture encompasses styles produced during the reign of Queen Victoria, characterised by a revival of historicism, intricate hand-carvings, and the use of dense, dark timbers such as mahogany and walnut.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods and veneers like mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, mortise and tenon joinery, and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved details rather than cast resin, old glass with minor imperfections, and traditional patination and wear consistent with age.

Pairing a dark wood antique cabinet with minimalist contemporary surroundings creates a striking focal point, allowing the historical craftsmanship and texture to stand out against neutral walls.

Maintain mahogany furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heating vents to prevent wood splitting, and clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth or specialist beeswax.
