Japanese lanterns, traditionally used in Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, evolved from practical outdoor lighting into highly decorative art objects crafted by skilled metalworkers, particularly during the Meiji period.

These pieces are typically constructed using cast and repousse bronze, brass, or copper alloys, often featuring intricate pierced work, engraved detailing, and patinated finishes.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight of the metal, the presence of traditional hand-chased motifs, natural oxidisation patterns, and the quality of the casting seam lines indicative of historic manufacturing techniques.

They make striking focal points when placed on sideboards or mantelpieces, adding a layer of global history and textural contrast to contemporary, eclectic, or minimalist room schemes.

Preservation involves dusting gently with a soft dry cloth and avoiding chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners that can strip the historic patination and damage the metal surface.
