An Unusual Pair of Silver Menu Holders

1900 - 1920
Description

These superb silver menu holders date to the reign of King George V. Each holder stands on a round flat base, with a wirework support frame to the back. The fronts are also rounded and rather unusually feature a 'window' aperture. The frame of the aperture can be removed to allow photographs, initials of the user, small personal items or anything that the user should wish to place into the inside of the menu holder, creating a very personalised feel.

The holders are presented here with a blue fabric inside, which is easily removed if desired.

These interesting examples are of good gauge silver, rare and make for a collectable and usable dining table item. Dimensions below.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver menu holders were introduced in late nineteenth-century formal dining settings to display individual or shared printed dinner menus and place cards for guests.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, often featuring enamel, cast motifs, or engine-turned detailing on weighted bases.

Authentic examples usually feature stamped official hallmarks indicating the silver purity, maker, assay office, and date letter, alongside period-appropriate joining and clipping mechanisms.

Beyond formal dining tables, these holders can be positioned on desks or sideboards to display photographs, business cards, or small artwork.

Carefully wipe the surfaces with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, taking care to avoid harsh chemical cleaners on the enamel inserts.
