Description

A dainty little Art Deco brooch in the form of a long thin bar with scalloped decoration along the sides, channel set with lovely old-cut blue and white pastes.

The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.

SIZE: 4 x 0.2cm.

WEIGHT: 1.4g.

MATERIALS: 935 silver - a silver fineness higher than sterling silver (925). We most often see 935 on pieces from Germany, Austria and Switzerland c.1920s-40s, which absolutely fits with this piece.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: Stamped 935 on the back.

CONDITION: In good vintage condition; the lines of the silver frame are a little wavy throughout, rather than dead straight. Fixes with a locking rollover clasp.

ERA: Art Deco c.1930.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco jewellery, prominent from the 1920s to the 1930s, is characterised by geometric lines, symmetry, stylised motifs, and the use of contrasting stones or metals.

Antique paste jewellery typically utilises hand-cut lead glass set into metals such as silver, sterling silver, or pinchbeck to imitate precious gemstones and diamonds.

Authentic pieces often feature period-appropriate fastenist mechanisms like c-clasps or safety roll-locks, hand-cut stones with closed backs, and traditional metal hallmarks or makers marks.

Vintage brooches can be mounted in shadow boxes, displayed on velvet ring cones, or repurposed as decorative elements on textiles and modern lapels.

Antique paste pieces should never be submerged in water or liquid jewellery cleaners, as moisture can seep behind the foil backs of the stones; instead, clean gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth.
