Super Rare English Sterling Silver Gilt Wager Cup Marriage Cup 1936 Antique 112g

A rare English solid sterling silver gilt wager cup or marriage cup. It is hallmarked for London 1936 with the makers mark being that of Birch & Gaydon. The Marriage cup originated in Bavaria c1560 and was called a ''Jungfraubecher''. It is a double drinking cup used in a wedding, the skirt cup for the groom and the smaller tilting cup for the bride. The idea is to both drink the contents at the same time without spilling a drop. They were later used as a wager cup that the end of the 19th century. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits and repairs. It measures approx. 5 inches (15.2cm) tall by 2 inches (4.9cm) across the larger cup and 1.5 inches (4.1 cm) across the smaller one and weighs 112 grams. A nice clean useable piece.
