Description

Size: 3ft 1in x 1ft 9in (95 x 53cm).

Antique Baluch pushti bag face with a repeat design on a dark indigo blue ground.

Circa 1900.

Pushti were used as pillows or back rests, they were filled with wool or straw through a small opening to one side. This face from a pushti originates from the region of Western Afghanistan. The design is a simple repeat design but has subtle use of colour and an open, spacious feel. The border is of one of the scarcer Baluch designs, often described as the 'bird foot' design. The wool is very soft to the touch.

The bag face is in good condition with very slight wear and good pile. There is slight historic damage to the left hand edge, this is reflected in the price.

Stock Number: D-0355.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bag faces are the front panels of nomadic storage sacks, traditionally woven by Baluch tribes in the borderlands of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan to store possessions during migration.

These pieces are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile and foundation, often incorporating natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects to achieve deep red, blue, and brown tones.

Authentic examples feature characteristic dark colour palettes, stiff or sturdy wool handles, traditional geometric motifs like guls or tree of life designs, and natural colour variations known as abrage.

Due to their small scale and rich textures, antique bag faces are frequently mounted as wall art, displayed on tabletops, or used as small accent floor coverings in eclectic and traditional spaces.

Preservation involves gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and avoiding excessive moisture to protect the natural wool fibres.
