Joint stools, named for the sophisticated mortise and tenon joints used in their construction, became common in seventeenth-century households. They served multiple purposes as seating or small tables before chairs were widely available.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid English oak using pegged joints rather than metal nails or screws. The timber was hand-sawn and shaped with traditional joinery techniques to ensure exceptional durability.

Authentic items display period-correct tool marks, natural oxidisation, peg construction without modern hardware, and wear patterns consistent with age. Timber shrinkage and hand-cut joinery are key indicators of genuine antiquity.

This type of furniture adds architectural weight and historical contrast to modern interiors. It functions effectively as an occasional side table, a plant stand, or standalone sculptural seating.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and drastic humidity fluctuations. Apply microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface without attracting dust or altering the patina.
