Early Eighteenth Century Walnut Chest on Stand

Description

Handsome early eighteenth century walnut chest on stand with good colour and patination. Well matched figured veneers with cross banding to the drawers. A country piece with stained pine sides and oak drawer linings. The veneers are thick cut: typical of the period. Most of the splayed pin brass handles are original. The escutcheons and locks are all original. The base possibly with some alterations; for instance the construction of the drawer linings of the base are not exactly the same as the top: otherwise the fit is very good which suggests that it was made at the same time as the chest. The sides are of the same stained pine timber and the dovetails on the carcase correspond. Corresponding crosscut mouldings to the top and base. The finish is dry and does not appear to have been french polished. The drawer runners and linings have been repaired and the drawers run well. Generally in very good solid condition. Circa 1720
