Silver gilt, also known as vermeil, involves coating a base metal of sterling silver with a thin layer of gold. This technique has been used for centuries to provide the luxurious appearance of solid gold while offering greater durability and lower cost for functional items like flatware and vessels.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver using traditional smithing techniques such as casting, hammering, and hand-chasing. The gold plating was often applied using fire gilding or early electroplating methods, followed by intricate hand-engraving of botanical or pastoral motifs.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining hallmarks stamped on the metal, such as the French boars head or minerva marks denoting silver standard purity, alongside makers marks. Additionally, hand-engraved details and natural signs of age-related patination and wear help confirm period manufacture.

These decorative items can be displayed inside glass cabinets, mounted in shadow boxes as wall art, or incorporated into tablescapes on silver display trays to add historic texture and metallic contrast to modern minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Silver gilt should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfiber cloth to avoid wearing away the delicate gold layer. Harsh chemical dips and abrasive silver polishes must be avoided, and items should be stored in tarnish-resistant cloth in low-humidity environments.
