Rare 19th Century Italian Hand Carved Memento Mori Hanging Candle Holder
 
An unusual hand carved pine hanging candle holder in the form of a memento mori religious artefact. This example is carved from one piece of pine, with metal central hanging support and candle holding prickets. Likely to have been used in a church or religious setting of sorts towards the later part of the 19th Century.

It''s a concept that has been used throughout history and across cultures as a reminder of the inevitability of death and the brevity of life. It''s often employed as a symbol or artistic trope to encourage a more meaningful and purposeful existence by prompting reflection on mortality.

In overall very presentable condition considering its age and use, without breaks or loss. Sections of the metal candle holders and top of the skulls are covered in old candle wax as shown which we have not removed as feel it adds to the look. This item can still be hung as first intended.
