This Georgian period gravy warmer, or argyll, dates to the eighteenth century and takes the form of serveware. Formed with a baluster body from Old Sheffield plate in a silver colour, the piece incorporates a removable lid topped with a spherical ball finial, a goose-neck spout, and a curved handle wrapped in woven cane. Decorative elements include beaded mouldings around the rim of the lid base and the lower perimeter of the foot, alongside a visible internal seam and slight copper bleed to the raised edges. The structure stands 18.5 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 8.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this item finds a practical home atop a sideboard in a dining room, bringing traditional English country house character to display settings. The piece can be used during formal meals to keep gravies and sauces warm by pouring hot water into the side vent, serving as a functional tableware accessory that requires careful hand washing and polishing appropriate for silver-plated items.

An argyll is a specialised vessel created in the mid-eighteenth century for serving gravy or sauce while keeping it warm at the dining table. It typically features an internal hot water reservoir or double-walled jacket to prevent fats from congealing during meal service.

Old Sheffield Plate was produced by fusing a layer of sterling silver onto a ingot of copper using high heat and rolling it into sheets. This technique predated electroplating and created durable hollowware with a distinct construction and warmth.

Authentic pieces often display subtle copper bleeding where silver has worn away on exposed edges, turned seams, un-plated bases, or silver inserts applied to hide exposed copper rims. In addition, handles often feature cane, wicker, or wood insulation to protect hands from heat.

An argyll is commonly displayed as a sculptural accent on a dining room sideboard, inside a glazed china cabinet, or arranged alongside historic hollowware on a fireplace mantelpiece.

Old Sheffield Plate should be cleaned gently using mild soapy water and a soft cloth, followed by light polishing with a non-abrasive silver cream. Excessive or harsh polishing should be avoided to prevent stripping the thin layer of silver from the copper substrate.
