A coffer bach, translating from Welsh as little coffer, is a miniature chest traditionally made in Wales during the 17th and 18th centuries, often used as a dowry chest or to store precious items.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native oak, featuring hand-carved panels, peg-and-tenon joinery, and frequently incorporated one or more drawers beneath the main lidded compartment.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber for period-correct oxidisation, hand-cut joinery, traditional pegged joints, and signs of genuine wear and tear consistent with eighteenth-century craftsmanship.

A small antique coffer can be placed on a sturdy console or used as a tabletop storage accent, introducing historical texture and warmth to modern minimalist or transitional spaces.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and occasionally feed the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
