Frames from the early 20th century often feature clean classical lines, subtle borders, and Edwardian or George V aesthetic influences, prioritising functional elegance over heavy Victorian ornamentation.

Authentic period pieces typically consist of a front sheet of sterling silver mounted over a wooden core, supported by a hinged wooden or cardboard strut backing covered in fabric such as velvet or moire silk.

Authenticity is verified by locating clear British hallmarks, which typically include a makers mark, the lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark such as the anchor for Birmingham, and a date letter.

Mixing period metalware with contemporary spaces adds textural contrast; place the frame on a minimalist desk, wooden bookshelf, or mantelpiece to introduce a polished metallic accent.

Use a soft microfibre cloth and a specialised silver polish sparingly to avoid removing the hallmarks or damaging any delicate backing materials, storing the item in a low-humidity environment.
