Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Carlton House desk is an 18th- and 19th-century writing desk design featuring a U-shaped superstructure wrapped around a central writing surface. The tiered gallery typically incorporates small drawers, cupboards, and sloping stationery boxes.

These desks are predominantly constructed using high-grade timbers such as satinwood, mahogany, or rosewood. Fine marquetry, crossbanding in exotic woods, cast brass hardware, pierced metal galleries, and leather writing inserts are common elements.

Authentic 19th-century examples showcase hand-dovetailed drawer joints, natural timber patination, cast brass fitments with historic oxidisation, and precise hand-cut marquetry inlays rather than modern machine veneers.

Place the desk as a focal point in a dedicated home office, library, or formal drawing room. It pairs well with a modern ergonomic or minimalist desk chair to create a refined contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary function.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and high humidity to prevent timber movement or fading.
