The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, emphasising handcraftsmanship, traditional techniques, and motifs inspired by nature.

Pieces from this era typically utilized sterling silver combined with native Scottish gemstones such as citrine, cairngorm, or freshwater pearls, often featuring Celtic or floral iconography.

Authentic pieces bear hallmarks stamped into the metal, indicating the makers mark, the assay office, the purity standard of sterling silver, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of manufacture.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive silver cloth to preserve patination, avoiding harsh liquid dips that can strip away desirable oxidisation in recessed areas.

Antique silver can be incorporated into modern table settings as a focal point for formal dining or displayed within glass cabinets to add texture and historical contrast to minimalist decor.
