Description

This delightful George V silver "hatching chick" pin cushion was designed by the highly collectable Sampson Mordan & Co and is hallmarked for Chester. The pin cushion is designed as a newly hatched chick sitting in half an egg shell. It is beautifully detailed, with the chick's back being the cushion, which is finished in a dark blue velvet. The chick is 'weighted' in such a way that, should it be knocked over, it will 'right' itself.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Novelty silver pin cushions gained immense popularity in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, manufactured primarily by silversmiths such as Sampson Mordan & Co as both functional vanity items and whimsical ornaments.

These pieces typically feature a cast or pressed sterling silver body combined with a velvet, silk, or plush fabric insert designed to securely hold pins and needles.

Authentic pieces usually bear clear British hallmarks indicating the assay office, date letter, silver standard, and makers mark, alongside detailed hand-chased feather texturing rather than modern casting flaws.

Such miniature decorative objects suit display on a dressing table tray, within a glass cabinet, or on a mantelpiece as a focal point of detailed craftsmanship.

Silver components require careful polishing with a specialized microfibre cloth while strictly avoiding liquid polish or moisture contact with the original velvet cushion to prevent damage.
