Description

A Maker's mark that is the Holy Grail for collectors of Bateman Family silver. This rare find is an Old English pattern silver dessert spoon, bearing the maker's mark of Peter & Jonathan Bateman. Jonathan Bateman went into business with his Brother and struck a mark in 1790. This mark is found for 5 months and only in 1790, due to Jonathan's untimely death. Peter then set up business with Jonathan's widow, Ann and the Bateman dynasty continued.

Due to the extremely limited time that this mark was struck, it has become most sought after by collectors, commanding interest even greater than the matriarch Hester Bateman (Jonathan's mother).

Dessert spoons are rarer that table or teaspoons (having been made in smaller quantities) and this example has a delightful engraved armorial to the top front. Dimensions below.

Georgian silver flatware refers to items crafted during the reigns of the four King Georges in Britain, a period marked by fine craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and the evolution of specialized dining utensils.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver, adhering to strict assay office standards, and were often hand-hammered, shaped, and engraved with family crests or monograms by skilled silversmiths.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark for sterling silver, a city assay mark, and a date letter.

Antique silver pieces can be displayed in glass-fronted cabinets, used within contemporary table settings to add historical contrast, or framed in shadow boxes as wall art.

Preservation involves storing silver in tarnish-resistant cloth, washing it gently with mild soap and warm water when necessary, and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can wear away engravings.
