Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian jewellery from the late nineteenth century frequently featured nature-inspired forms, including floral motifs and starbursts. Opals gained immense popularity during this period, often paired with rose-cut or old-mine cut diamonds to create contrasting textures and light reflections.

Victorian craftspeople commonly used 15ct gold as a standard for fine jewellery alongside silver settings. Silver-topped gold was a prevalent technique used to set diamonds, ensuring the yellow gold tone did not distort the colourless appearance of the stones.

Authentic pieces display a distinct dual-metal construction where a thin layer of silver is layered over gold backing. Furthermore, British pieces from this era may feature 15ct hallmarks, a purity standard that was officially discontinued in 1932.

An antique pendant can be layered with fine contemporary gold chains of varying lengths for a modern, textured look. It functions equally well suspended from a delicate silk cord or a traditional gold trace chain.

Opals are relatively soft and porous gemstones, requiring gentle cleaning with a soft, damp cloth rather than harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners. Store the item away from direct heat and sudden temperature changes to prevent cracking or crazing of the stones.
