Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This George III Old Sheffield plate cake and bread basket belongs to the Regency period around 1800 by Roberts and Cadman of Sheffield. The rectangular piece stands on a fluted pedestal base and includes a plain silver-coloured body, an overhead swing handle with ribbon and shell decoration, maker marks on the body and handle, a crest, a gadrooned border, and shell corner motifs. Signs of an ancient repair appear on the underside of the handle. Measuring 22 cm high with the handle up, 31 cm wide, and 24 cm deep, the basket works as a dining table centrepiece or a decorative display vessel in a traditional home.

FAQs

Clean gently using warm water with mild soap and a soft cloth, followed by light polishing with a non-abrasive silver cream to avoid wearing down the delicate silver layer.

An antique silver basket can serve as a central decorative dish on a dining table, a catch-all tray on a sideboard, or a refined vessel for displaying fresh fruit in a traditional kitchen.

Authentic pieces often show subtle copper show-through or bleeding on high points of wear, feature hand-soldered joints, display seam lines inside folded edges, and lack electroplating maker marks.

These baskets were constructed using copper sheets fused with thin layers of silver on one or both sides, often finished with solid silver wire edges or die-stamped silver mounts to hide exposed copper rims.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process discovered in the mid-eighteenth century where a layer of sterling silver was thermally fused to copper ingots before being rolled into sheets and worked into hollowware.
