FAQs

Berry spoons are large serving spoons, typically featuring embossed fruit and leaf motifs on the bowl, originating in the Georgian era. While many date from the mid-to-late 18th century, a significant proportion were older plain spoons later retrofitted with chased and repousse decoration during the Victorian period.

These items are crafted from solid sterling silver, conforming to the British standard of 925 parts per thousand. The decorative bowls and handles are typically worked using repousse and chasing techniques, where designs are hammered and punched into the metal from both sides to create high-relief ornamentation.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark denoting sterling silver, a duty mark, and a date letter indicating the year of assay. Careful inspection of the chasing work and wear patterns can also reveal whether the decoration is contemporary to the spoons manufacture or a later addition.

Antique silver cutlery can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, mounted in traditional shadow boxes, or utilized functionally during formal dining occasions. Their polished surfaces reflect light, adding a layer of reflective metallic texture to modern or traditional dining room settings.

Preservation requires storing silver in tarnish-resistant cloth or specialized anti-tarnish bags in a low-humidity environment. Cleaning should be done sparingly using a non-abrasive silver cloth or specialist liquid polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the desired patination from recessed areas.
