This “Edwardian Opal and Diamond 18ct Gold Ring” found a buyer.

It was listed by Corvidae Antique. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

An extraordinarily pretty antique ring in 18-carat white gold showcasing a lovely fiery blue-green opal in a halo of sparkling old-cut diamonds.

SIZE: I and a half (UK), 4 and a half (US). The face of the ring measures approximately 1.5 x 1.3cm and it sits around 1cm above the finger. The opal is 9 x 7mm, surrounded by 14 diamonds of approx 2mm.

WEIGHT: 5.0g.

MATERIALS: 18-carat (750) white gold, opal, diamond.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: Stamped SD LTD alongside a partially visible 18-carat gold hallmark inside the shank.

CONDITION: The ring overall is in excellent antique condition. The opal has a chip at one edge on the back which under certain lights (under magnification and if you're really looking for it) can be seen through the front, see final photo taken in the most unflattering light possible! This has been reflected in the price, although we'd be willing to bet no one would ever notice it while they're admiring your finger so it's a chance to snap up a beautiful bargain.

ERA: Estimated late Edwardian-Art Deco (c.1910-1920s).

Declaration

Corvidae Antique has dated this Edwardian Opal and Diamond Ring to the Edwardian era.

Edwardian jewellery, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, is characterised by delicate, lace-like platinum settings, fine millegrain detailing, and a frequent combination of diamonds with luminous central gemstones like opals and pearls.

These pieces predominantly feature 18-carat yellow gold, platinum-topped gold, and naturally mined gemstones such as opals, sapphires, rubies, and old-cut diamonds sourced during the height of the British Empire.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate hallmarks, handcrafted settings with subtle imperfections, hand-cut diamonds such as old mine or old European cuts, and artisanal techniques like millegrain edging rather than modern cast precision.

An antique ring can be paired with contemporary minimalist bands for a contrasting stacked look, or worn alone as a statement piece to highlight its historical craftsmanship against modern attire.

Opals contain a high water content and are softer than diamonds, requiring careful handling away from harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent cracking and maintain their iridescence.
