Victorian novelty scent bottles were small, cleverly designed containers used to carry perfume, often shaped to mimic everyday objects such as flasks, books, or animals, reflecting the eras fascination with whimsical yet functional items.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, often featuring interior glass liners to protect the fragrance, along with cork or ground-glass stoppers and occasional gilt wash interiors.

Authentic pieces bear a full set of British hallmarks, typically including a makers mark, the sterling silver lion passant, a city mark indicating Chester (such as three sheaves of wheat with a sword), and a date letter corresponding to the active registry year.

This piece can be styled as an objet dart on a vanity tray, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or atop a stack of vintage books to add a touch of historic metalwork to a scheme.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a specialist microfibre cloth and a mild, non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh scrubbing that can wear away hallmarks or delicate details, and stored in a dry environment.
