Description

This very high quality piece of impressive Raj period Indian silver is superbly decorated with three dimensional deep relief repousse work in the form of traditional male and female figures carrying out various tasks and religious customs.

The detail and depth of the decoration is very fine and rarely available. This type of decoration is completely hand worked using chisels and punches working from both the inside and outer surfaces to produce this amazing work of art which is finished with deep carved engraving throughout the figurative centre with a boarder of acanthus leaves above and below. The underside of this impressive bowl is decorated with an engraved peacock.

The silver from which the bowl is made tests as high grade.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

Indian colonial silver from the 19th century often combined traditional indigenous craftsmanship with European forms, featuring distinct regional styles such as Kutch, Cutch, or Calcutta work characterised by dense, narrative repousse decoration.

These items were typically handcrafted from high-purity silver using the repousse and chasing techniques, where the metal was hammered from the reverse side to form raised figures and intricate relief patterns.

Authentic pieces often display minor artisanal inconsistencies, heavy hand-hammered relief work, and sometimes pseudo-makers marks or initials reflecting the colonial export market of the period.

It can be placed on a surface as a standalone decorative object or used to hold small curiosities, bringing metallic texture and historical narrative to a mantlepiece or sideboard.

Preserve antique silver by gently dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaning agents, and limiting chemical polishes to maintain the original patination and depth of the repousse work.
