FAQs

A mule chest is a traditional English storage item that evolved during the late 17th century by adding one or more drawers to the base of a standard blanket chest or coffer. This hybrid design remained popular throughout the Georgian period for storing household linens, clothing, and personal belongings.

These chests were predominantly constructed from native English hardwoods such as oak, often featuring frame-and-panel construction to accommodate seasonal wood movement. Joinery typically utilised pegged mortise and tenon joints, complemented by hand-cut dovetails on the internal drawer boxes and forged brass hardware.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction techniques, timber characteristics, and hardware. Genuine period pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular hand-cut dovetails, iron or brass fixings consistent with the era, and natural ageing such as oxidation and shrinkage of the wood over centuries.

An antique oak chest can function as a practical focal point in a living room, hallway, or bedroom, providing both surface display space and concealed storage. Its rich texture and dark wood tone ground contemporary minimalist schemes or complement eclectic, traditional spaces.

To preserve antique timber, maintain stable indoor humidity levels and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally apply a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the wood.
