Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Hunting Horn Table Lighter (1887)

19th century
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

An exceptional, fine and impressive, unusual antique Victorian English sterling silver table lighter modelled in the form of a hunting horn; an addition to our Victorian silverware collection.

This exceptional antique Victorian silver lighter, in sterling standard, has been realistically modelled in the form of a fox hunting horn.

The swept cylindrical body of this novelty silver straight trumpet is embellished with the original gilding to the lower portion representing the copper bell.

The bell is ornamented with the contemporary engraved inscription 'P. Saltmarshe, Esq, 1889, from Major General Ravenhill'.

The rim of the antique lighter bell is encompassed with bands of tooled decoration.

The upper portion of this antique lighter is encircled with further bands of tooled decoration and retains the original screw fit mouthpiece; once removed this allows access to the wick.

Such solid silver examples bearing the traditional hunting horn copper effect are rare.

This Victorian hunting horn table lighter serves as a unique and unforgettable gift, ideal for significant birthdays, retirements or Father's Day celebrations. Its distinctive design and classic appeal enhance any study, library or bar setting, making it particularly valued by enthusiasts of antique smoking paraphernalia or historical artifacts.

Condition

This impressive antique Victorian lighter is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The original gilding is in excellent condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the horn are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this exceptional smoking accessory.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th century, novelty table lighters became popular tabletop accessories in private clubs and homes. Silversmiths crafted lighters in whimsical and thematic forms, such as hunting horns, street lamps, and artillery shells, catering to the hobbies and interests of Victorian gentlemen.

Victorian table lighters were frequently constructed using hallmarked sterling silver, silver plate, or brass, often combining metalwork with horn or glass reservoirs. Internal components contained cotton wicks and oil reservoirs designed to produce a steady flame for lighting cigars and pipes.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarks, including the makers mark, town mark, standard mark, and date letter indicating the exact year of manufacture. Engraved presentation dates, period construction methods, and period-appropriate wick fittings also assist in verification.

A hunting horn table lighter functions as a decorative object when positioned on a mahogany desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece. It integrates well within traditional, rustic, or dark academia interior schemes alongside leather-bound books and brass accessories.

Maintain the surface by polishing gently with a soft cotton cloth and silver polish formulated for antiques, avoiding abrasive cleaners. Ensure liquid fuel is completely drained if the piece is displayed purely as a decorative item to prevent tarnishing or corrosion.
