Antique Uzbek Suzani, Floral Design on a Red Ground, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 7ft 10in x 6ft 2in (240 x 188cm).

Antique Uzbek suzani, silk embroidery on a fine hand woven red cotton ground which has been block printed with a floral watermark.

Circa 1900.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are often embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is probably woven by Tajik ladies, it is silk embroidery of a floral design on a fine hand woven red cotton ground which has been block printed with a floral watermark.

The condition is excellent with only very slight wear and a few scattered small old stains, the suzani is not backed.

The suzani is ready for display or it could be used as a bed cover.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Suzani is a hand-embroidered textile traditionally crafted in Uzbekistan and wider Central Asia, historically created by brides and their families as a central component of a wedding dowry. The term derives from the Persian word suzan, meaning needle, designating needleworked textile panels.

Suzanis are constructed using handwoven cotton or silk ground fabrics woven in narrow strips that are joined together. The decorative embroidery is executed using dyed silk threads in chain stitch (ilmok) or couching stitch (basma) patterns.

Authentic antique Suzanis exhibit natural plant and mineral dyes, resulting in varied colour depth and subtle dye lot shifts known as abrash. Structural indicators include multi-panel fabric assembly, hand-stitched seams, and slight variations in needlework consistent with manual craftsmanship.

Interior designers frequently display Suzanis as large-scale wall hangings above headboards or sideboards to introduce pattern and vibrant texture into a room. They can also be utilized as decorative bed covers, sofa throws, or framed behind protective glass.

Historic silk embroideries must be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent dye degradation and fibre weakening. Cleaning should only be performed by professional textile conservators, and hanging requires uniform weight distribution using fabric hook-and-loop headers rather than direct tacks.
