A vinaigrette is a small ornamental container used during the 18th and 19th centuries to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar or smelling salts, used to mask unpleasant odours or revive someone from faintness.

Victorian vinaigrettes are predominantly crafted from sterling silver with gilt interiors, frequently paired with decorative elements such as opaline glass, cut crystals, semi-precious stones, or mother-of-pearl.

Authentic pieces typically feature period hallmarks for silver purity and maker marks, alongside hand-engraved interior grilles and secure hinges characteristic of 19th-century metalworking techniques.

These small objects make ideal focal points when displayed inside glass-fronted cabinets, on decorative vanity trays, or styled atop stackable art books on a coffee table.

Clean silver gently with a non-abrasive microfibre cloth specifically treated for precious metals, avoiding harsh chemical dips, and wipe opaline glass with a soft, damp cloth.
