Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari, typically characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and gilded decoration.

Traditional Imari pieces were crafted from kaolin clay, fired at high temperatures, decorated with underglaze cobalt blue, glazed, and fired again before hand-painting overglaze enamels and gold leaf for a final low-temperature firing.

Authentic antique pieces feature characteristic asymmetrical hand-painted patterns, slight irregularities in the glaze, spur marks on the base from kiln supports, and signs of gentle wear to the overglaze gilding.

An Imari plate can be displayed on a plate stand upon a mantlepiece or sideboard, mounted within a wall gallery arrangement alongside art, or placed inside a glazed display cabinet.

Antique porcelain should be dusted regularly with a dry soft cloth or washed gently by hand in tepid water with mild liquid detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals, dishwashers, and abrasive sponges that damage gilded details.
