Royal Vienna Porcelain Cabinet Plate – “Aurora u. Cephales”, Signed Sibl, c. Mid-19th Century

A superb Royal Vienna porcelain cabinet plate featuring a beautifully hand-painted classical scene titled “Aurora u. Cephales”, signed by the artist Sibl. The composition depicts the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, reaching toward the mortal hunter Cephalus, with cherubs floating above. The painter’s mastery of anatomy, drapery, and mythological nuance is evident in every detail, reflecting the refined artistic sensibilities of mid-19th-century Viennese porcelain.

Surrounding the central image is a rich cobalt blue border, adorned with raised gilded scrollwork and acanthus leaf motifs—hallmarks of Royal Vienna’s luxurious style. The plate’s reverse bears the traditional blue beehive mark, indicative of its connection to the legacy of the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Vienna.

Although the original factory ceased operations in 1864, many fine-quality pieces were produced by successor workshops that honoured its styles and used similar marks. Royal Vienna style porcelain is distinguished by hand-painted central vignettes often depicting mythological or historical scenes, framed by rich cobalt blue or dark grounds and elaborate raised gilding. Originally produced by the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna, the style was widely produced across Europe during the nineteenth century.

These decorative plates were constructed using hard-paste porcelain, coated in dark cobalt blue underglaze or overglaze enamels. Fine painters applied minute detail to the central scene using enamel paints, followed by the application of liquid gold leaf gilding which was burned and polished to create textured scrollwork.
