Victorian 15ct Gold Belt Buckle Ring

19th century
Sold 11 April 2026 · Corvidae Antique
This “Victorian 15ct Gold Belt Buckle Ring” found a buyer.

It was listed by Corvidae Antique. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A lovely antique gold buckle ring in richly coloured gold studded with three glinting purple stones (untested but likely garnets).

The belt buckle symbolises eternity, loyalty, strength and protection. It represents the binding love between the giver and the wearer, and also a love ever-lasting as the loop has no beginning and no end. It was often used on Victorian betrothal and wedding jewellery, as well as in mourning jewellery as a mark of respect, remembrance and enduring love. Queen Victoria reportedly caused a surge in the popularity of buckle rings when she wore one to symbolise her induction into the Order of the Garter.

SIZE: R and a half (UK), 9 (US). Approximately 4mm wide.

WEIGHT: 2.6g.

MATERIALS: 15-carat gold. Fifteen-carat gold pieces are not overly common (in the UK only really used between 1854 and 1932) and this fineness was generally used in high quality pieces.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: There is a partial illegible hallmark inside the shank. The ring looks to have been resized so the hallmark may have been lost then.

CONDITION: In very good antique condition with normal light surface wear.

ERA: Estimated late Victorian/Edwardian (c.late 1800s-1914).

Belt and buckle motifs in Victorian jewellery frequently symbolised loyalty, fidelity, and everlasting attachment, often exchanged as tokens of affection or remembrance.

Victorian fine jewellery commonly utilised 15 carat gold, a specific British standard of gold alloy used between 1854 and 1932, offering a distinct rich colour.

Authenticity is typically determined through British hallmark stamps, maker marks, the specific weight and colour of the gold alloy, and period-appropriate construction techniques.

Antique jewellery collections are often displayed within modern homes inside glass-topped table vitrines, antique jewellery boxes, or styled neatly on decorative ceramic trinket dishes.

Preservation requires storing pieces individually in soft pouches to prevent scratching, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, and periodically having settings checked by a professional jeweller.
