19th century
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

An exceptional, fine and impressive, unusual antique Victorian sterling silver cycling medallion; an addition to our collectable ornamental presentation collection.

This exceptional and unusual antique George V Scottish sterling silver medallion has a circular form.

The anterior surface of this antique silver medallion is embellished with the contemporary engraved presentation inscription 'Presented by The Lady Octavia Shaw Stewart to the Octavia Bicycle Club, 1891'.

The posterior surface of the medallion bears engraved ornamentation replicating the details of a bicycle wheel's spokes, with each segment bearing the name and date of the winner's race.

The swept raised border to each side of the medallion is encircled with an undulating engraved border reflecting the stylised tread of a bike wheel.

The outer rim of the medallion is plain and unembellished.

The apex of this exceptional and collectable antique Victorian silver medallion is surmounted with a cast model of a bicycle, incorporating engraved features highlighting the frame, spokes and mechanisms.

The upper portion of the model bears a plain ring loop; this allows the medallion to be suspended from a ribbon or chain.

Such medallions with cast silver models to the apex are rare to the market.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian cycling medallion is a commemorative silver or gold token awarded or presented to members of cycling clubs during the late nineteenth-century boom in bicycle recreation.

These medals were predominantly cast or struck in solid sterling silver, often featuring hand-engraved copperplate calligraphy and detailed miniature sculptural top-pieces or borders.

Authentic British pieces carry official assay office hallmarks indicating silver purity, city of manufacture, year letter, and makers initials stamped directly on the metal.

Antique medallions and watch fobs are frequently worn today as unique necklace pendants suspended from modern sterling silver chains or repurposed into bracelet charms.

Gently wipe silver pieces with a soft, non-abrasive polishing cloth to remove surface tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip dark natural oxidisation from deep engravings.
