During the Victorian era, the rise in correspondence and literacy led to an increase in decorative desk accessories, with letter openers crafted from precious metals and organic materials becoming essential fixtures on writing desks.

These items were typically constructed using sterling silver for the blades and ferrules, combined with natural materials such as mother of pearl, ivory, or bone for the handles.

Authentic pieces feature crisp British hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, indicating the assay office, date letter, and silver standard, alongside the characteristic iridescent sheen and weight of genuine mother of pearl.

Place the object flat on a wooden desk, a coffee table book stack, or a mantelpiece to add a layer of historical texture and refined metallic detail to contemporary spaces.

Clean sterling silver gently with a specialist microfibre polishing cloth to avoid abrasive wear, and keep mother of pearl away from harsh chemicals and prolonged direct sunlight.
