Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Fine shrinkage lines in the burr veneer: natural movement of old glue and timber.
Hand-shaded floral marquetry across the frieze: decorative inlay of the mid-nineteenth century.
Cast foliate mounts pinned to the pilasters: late Victorian Rococo revival styling.
Mirror plate shows faint misting at the bottom: natural aging of silvering.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian burr walnut credenza dates from 1860 in the Victorian style. The piece measures 183 cm high, 188 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. The exterior displays a warm brown timber finish with kingwood cross-bandings, accented by gilt ormolu mounts and decorative floral scroll carvings. The serpentine front contains two central glazed doors with brass pendant drop handles, flanked by open side shelving sections and standing on a low plinth base. A large shaped mirror plate rises at the back, set within an ornate carved frame. In a modern interior, this credenza serves as a display cabinet in a principal reception room or dining space. The glass-fronted compartments store and exhibit tableware or decorative items, while the open side shelves provide additional display areas for books or ornaments. The flat upper surface holds lamps or decorative objects against the mirrored background.

Popularised during the nineteenth century, a Victorian burr walnut credenza typically features a central glazed or panelled cabinet flanked by open or closed shelves, often topped with an ornate mirrored backplate and decorated with figure-rich veneer and cast brass or bronze mounts.

These pieces were primarily constructed using solid hardwood frames overlaid with figure-rich burr walnut veneers, floral marquetry inlays, glass door panels, silvered mirror plates, and gilt-bronze or brass ormolu fittings.

Authentic nineteenth-century credenzas exhibit hand-cut joinery, un-planed secondary timbers on back boards, natural oxidisation on metal mounts, and subtle age-related character in early glass or mirror backings.

Position the piece as a focal point in a dining room, hallway, or formal drawing room, balancing its intricate silhouette against simple architectural backgrounds and curated display items.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting or fading, dust metalwork gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and apply natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the wood finish.
