It was listed by Jeff Sims Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A delightful and rare all silver cayenne bottle & spoon. This unusual piece dates from early in the reign of King George V. The baluster shaped body has a flat base. The pull off lid has stepped decoration and a flame finial. Inside there is a fitted spoon. The bottle would have been for cayenne pepper, a condiment served at the table from the 18th Century into the 20th Century. Over the years it has been suggested that the small spoon and modest container was used for other (more nefarious and exotic) powdered substances, but this is open to debate. A lovely collector's piece. Dimensions below.

The George V era spans the reigns from 1910 to 1936, characterised by a revival of classic Georgian and neoclassical designs alongside early art deco influences in British silversmithing.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver using traditional techniques such as spinning, casting, and hand-finishing, often featuring removable pierced lids for dispensing spices.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmark stamps indicating the assay office, the lion passant for sterling silver, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of manufacture.

Displaying polished silver items on open shelving, dining sideboards, or glass-fronted cabinets adds reflective metallic accents and historic character to contemporary spaces.

Preserve silver by cleaning it infrequently with a non-abrasive, high-quality silver polish and storing it in a dry environment free from humidity and direct sunlight.
