Norwegian silver and enamel work gained international renown in the late 19th and 20th centuries, heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and traditional Scandinavian motifs such as Viking longships.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver, often with a gold wash known as vermeil or silver gilt, combined with vitreous enamel fired over a textured silver base.

Authentic pieces usually feature maker marks, silver purity stamps such as 830S or 925S, and the word Norway, alongside traditional guilloche or translucent enamelling techniques.

Small decorative silver items work well as focal points on a mantelpiece, dining table centre, or within a glass-fronted cabinet, adding metallic contrast and historical interest to contemporary spaces.

Silver gilt and enamel should be cleaned gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to avoid scratching the delicate glass surface or wearing away the thin layer of gold plating. Chemical silver dips must be avoided as they can damage the enamel.
