Gilt and Gesso has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
An impressive proportion hand forged, estate made fire back of splendid asymmetric form, the family crest is off centre and the shoulders measurements differ, supporting our belief that this is a 1 off, not repeated cast and most likely on an estate forge.

The heraldic crest features the crown with a lion to the right and an upright dog or hound to its left, the central motif is only partially distinguishable due to lengthy time spent in a fire.
A substantial fire back with a reassuring depth of 4cm in places and considerable weight, measuring 90cm wide, this was for a large open fire.
