Description

A rare superbly designed Continental solid silver dish or bowl. It is hallmarked with the 800 standard mark. I would date it to c1920s. It has been superbly designed with the sides pierced in the form of spider webs and an engraved spider to the middle of each web. It is in superb condition being free from dings holes and repairs, a single tiny split see final photo. It measures approx. 8 inches (20.4cm) across by 2 inches (5.1cm) tall and weighs 240 grams. A very rare piece.

FAQs

Continental 800 silver refers to silver items manufactured in European countries outside of the UK, containing 80 parts pure silver and 20 parts alloy, typically marked with standard purity stamps rather than British hallmarking systems.

Pierced and openwork silver is traditionally crafted using a combination of hand-sawing, piercing with a jewelers saw, and fine chiselling or repousse work to achieve intricate decorative motifs.

Authentication involves examining makers marks, standard purity hallmarks like the crescent and crown for German silver, weight consistency, and natural oxidisation patterns appropriate for the period.

A decorative silver bowl can be displayed as a standalone focal point on a coffee table or sideboard, leveraging its reflective metallic surface to contrast with matte ceramics or organic textures.

Antique silver should be cleaned infrequently using a soft microfiber cloth and a specialized non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip desirable patina.
